Doug,
1. I'll leave OS X diagnostics  issues to those running it (I'm still on 
9.2.2).
2. From all I've read you're already at a disadvantage with only 192 meg
of ram & 266mhz cpu.
3. You can safely bump your processor one notch up via the jumper block
if it hasn't been done already. (see xlr8 website for this info).
4. You can pick up a faster zif from G3 Beige or B&W or you can go
the G3/G4 zif upgrade route from OWC or others. Just depends on $.
