As an update, I went into OS 9.2 and tried the same task. Discribe did the test write just fine at 12x, so I'm pretty sure it's just a memory problem in OSX.

Yeah.

I also turned off the default to DAO mode as I'm sure that requires more memory. While I was there I checked to see what the system profiler said about my wings card. Just says the same as it does in X; audio/video card.

OSX Doesn't support the Wings card, and this shouldn't have anything to do with the burning problem.

I'm also wondering if the reason why iTunes won't recognize the new burner is because I'm not the root user?

No.If the drive is listed in System INformation as 'fully supported' iTunes recogninzes it. If the finder recognizes it, so should iTunes.

As I do in Linux all of the time, I set up a user and root account in X and always log in as a user instead of as root.

Truthfully, root isn't needed in OS X (and it's also making me think really hard about my Linux practice, as well, to be honest). So long as your console isn't readily available to untrusted third parties (such as in a lab environment or an open office environment) being logged on as an admin user is not myuch different than being logged on as a regular user except lots of stuff is far more convenient)

The first user set up in OS X is an administrative user, who is in the sudoers file. Root does not have a login, hence hackers seeking root access, can't get a shell (not easily). Morover, there's a log of sudo actions, which isn't the case for su, which makes finding out who did what easier. (Vastly useful for systems with multiple people having root access)

If you need a root shell for some reason do sudo -s which gives you a root shell.

However, normal users (unless severely restricted at account creation) should be able to burn CD's.

I suspect many problems will go away when you have more memory.
