As an update, I went into OS 9.2 and tried the same task. Discribe did the test write just fine at 12x, so I'm pretty sure it's just a memory problem in OSX. I also turned off the default to DAO mode as I'm sure that requires more memory. While I was there I checked to see what the system profiler said about my wings card. Just says the same as it does in X; audio/video card. I'm also wondering if the reason why iTunes won't recognize the new burner is because I'm not the root user? As I do in Linux all of the time, I set up a user and root account in X and always log in as a user instead of as root.

I don't really need to burn CD's on this system as I have many more systems I can use, just wanted to try it out once I got it!
You ARE aware, aren't you that you can just stick in a blank CDR or RW and the Finder will let you write files to it and burn it?
Music CD's can be made with iTunes...I've never needed to *buy* software just to burn CD's...
Just a message from Doug...
