Actually, font storage isn't that different in OSX than it was under OS9. The
main difference is in where you put the fonts. There are three places to put
them, which one to use is up to how you want them accessed.

The first location is (I'll use my HD Shimi as a reference point, fill in your
own drive):
Shimi/Library/Fonts
Anything you put here is accessable to all user accounts and apps.

The second is:
Shimi/Users/<yourusername>/Library/Fonts
Any that you store here can only be accessed by that user and the apps that are
run under it. No other users or apps run by other users can get to them.

The third is for reference only. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE SHOULD YOU MODIFY IT:
Shimi/System/Library/Fonts
This is for Apple supplied fonts and is placed there by the installer. Don't use it.

Like I said, a little different, but not hard and still similar to how OS9 was.
