As digital prepress for a four color print shop, fonts have been the bane of my existance in the past. From what you are saying this is what I am assuming. You are using Jaguar You are using Freehand 9 or 8 You are using Illustrator 10 or CS You are using ATM for font management in Classic since I think I saw that mentioned in another of your responses. There are a couple of problems with this set-up that are easily fixed. I'm assuming Jaguar since Panther has Font Book built in that gives you the option of adding fonts for X and Classic at the same time. If you are a designer Font Book probably won't work for you since if you have too many fonts on at once Safari and the Printer Setup Utility won't work until you turn off a bunch and restart. If you aren't a designer you might try upgrading to Panther. I'm not a designer and I just turn on the fonts needed for whatever file I'm ripping so Font Book works fine for me and I always just have it add for only me so incase some weird font screws up my user fonts folder I can just trash it and it won't mess up the whole system. The good thing about Jaguar is that it supports nested fonts within the library/fonts/ folder. This is good because in Freehand you can go to File/Collect For Output and it will grab all the fonts, pictures and junk and put them in one folder the actual ones the file is using... not any extras so you don't grab the wrong ones. Then you can take those fonts and put them in a folder named whatever that job is Fonts ie *John Doe BC Fonts* and drop it into the font folder.... then if you are finding you are getting too many open at once you can just pull them out of there. Though in Jaguar you have to close and reopen the X application before it will recognize them, in Panther you just close the file and reopen it after turning fonts on and they are correct. When I was using Jaguar I'd Favorite Place my username/library/fonts folder so I had instant access to drop a folder of fonts in there when needed. Next I assumed Freehand 8 or 9 and Illustrator 10 or CS because the former two are Classic Applications and the latter two are X native. ATM works with the Classic Apps but not the X native ones. Which is why you can export a Macintosh EPS from Freehand and have all the fonts missing when you open it in Illustrator 10 or Photoshop 7 or later for that matter. By doing what I said above you're problem will go away. The funny thing about PDF's is that Acrobat 5 and up is X native but the Distiller part is still a Classic application so you can make a file in Illustrator then save it as an eps then try to use Distiller and not be able to because it can't find the fonts. This is a bit more of a pain because Distiller does NOT support nested folders. So if you were working on the *John Doe BC* I mentioned above in Illustrator then wanted to use Distiller to make the pdf to send off to your printer you'd have to go under Settings in Distiller to Font Locations ( or hit Command L) and show Distiller where the *John Doe BC Fonts* folder that we popped into the library is. Then it will work just fine. Personally I keep Font Book and ATM in my dock and use them for X and Classic font management respectively.
