Hmmm. I rarely use Acrobat or Illustrator and haven't used Freehand. Perhaps the font is a different format. OSX nativly uses dfont but the OS is compatible with Trutype, Postscript and Windows Truetype fonts.
However, perhaps the applications themselves don't understand certain types. Taking a quick peek into my fonts folder shows that Arial is in a FFIL font suitcase format while the Helvetica font is a Data fork .dfont format.
