I ran TechTools from the CD and did the whole works - auto fix.
It fixed a bunch of bundle bits and file dates and custom icons. It reported
that some files failed (nothing serious) and advised me to do a clean
install of the System folder. Before I do that I will trash the preferences
as you suggest. I probably have a problem with something I downloaded, or
possibly with the recent install of a Umax PowerLook II scanner, or maybe a
virus or worm.  Before I do the clean install, I will see if what TechTools
just did for me has improved anything. I was grateful it did not turn up
anything major. I let Techtools do the full scan for problems every time I
shut down at night. TechTools has bailed me out of some jams before. I like
it.
