This makes little sense. Melissa was an e-mail virus. Word is not an e-mail program, and Office 2001 was explicitly OS 9 only; it doesn't run under OS X, you need Office X, aka Office 2002.

This is Intego's lies that I referred to in an earlier posting. This was never a real virus in the wild, as it had no way of disseminating and no payload.
It was the product of some newbie Mac programmer who realized (as they all do at one point or another) that you can make an executable look like a data file by changing the file creator type (to get the proper icon, or just slap a custom icon on it) and sticking the 'viral' code in the resource fork of the program. It doesn't really fool the system, if you do get info on the file it says it's an application, the payload won't run if you drop the file onto iTunes.
This has been the same dire threat to Macs since they invented creator codes/file types and resource forks, which puts it in about 1982-83 or so...during the development of the original Mac.
This was a crass attempt by Intego to garner attention to itself and sell it's product. It's as good an illustration of the inherently corrupt nature of selling AV products for the Mac as any I can think of...this was *literally* a case of an AV company making a virus then touting their cure for it.
