I dunno about it being snake oil, but the number of viruses on the Macintosh OS X are very few, but there are ones out there.

Prove it!
Not ONE AV vendor or Security site makes ANY mention of OS X 'virus'
Well, maybe not in OS X yet but my wife uses an iMac w/ 9.1 and ONCE, to our knowledge, she passed along worm viruses to several of her PC associates in Microsoft Office docs. The Mac is unaffected but remains a "carrier" for viruses. So the only reason to use antivirus software is to avoid passing viruses off to your more susceptible and weak PC users.
She has Norton which she runs manually from time to time, not automatically , because it has been known to cause problems. I use no antivirus on my G3 or iBook.
