Panther ran quite well on my Beige. Panther is a bit faster at most things on lower end machines. The question is:
Would it do any good to put panther on my beige desktop? (It's got Jaguar right now)
There is a difference between unsupported and workable. He is partially correct as Panther will not install or boot anything lower than a B&W G3. There is a solution however....It has a Sonnet G3 500 on it, 768mB, a Sonnet IDE card, and a USB card.
The guy at the Mac Store said Panther won't go on any machine that doesn't have built-in USB.
Is this true? And... if it's true, is there anyone yet who makes a pre-install program that will go around that limitation, just like the people who make programs that you can use to make Old World Macs run Jaguar?
You nailed it on the head. Nab a copy of XPostFacto and then you can install and boot Panther on OldWorld (The Beige G3 is an Old World machine, it just happened to work with Jaguar).
Just a note, they haven't gotten the built-in video support quite right yet. So you'd do well to install a Radeon 7000 or 9200 video card and use that. Read up.
