I would then check for that directory, but it didn't exist - it had already deleted it. Further if instead of trying to install I had it just download the update, it would fail after the download saying to check that I could write to /Library/Packages/. I did have write access to this directory, but just to be sure I made it writable by everyone. It didn't help. I tried the same with the /tmp/501/... hierarchy. Still no help. I tried rebooting into single user mode and force running. It found no problems. I'm leaving out several reboots just to make sure something wasn't temporarily hosed, plus deleting cache files and the cached download, etc. No help. Finally, after getting completely frustrated I decided to try DiskWarrior on a whim. All I can say is, if you don't own DiskWarrior, buy it now. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't. Many times this program has come to the rescue for weird problems that have cropped up and, needless to say, after rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior, software update worked fine again.
