OK Katzy...this is precisely what I have been experiencing with my 20GB 5400RPM DeathStar in my Linux "daily drive" box. To quote Woody Allen, "what we have here is a dead shark." I bought a Seagate 120GB drive to replace it, but with papers due, and all the crap you go through during the final few weeks of a given College semester, I haven't been able to give this machine long enough downtime to fix it. Back your drive up and replace it. Seagate gives a 5 year warrantee on their hard drives now...I think that says something about their confidence in the quality of their hard drives. If not, you get replacements within a 5 year lifespan. I'll also have to back Kyle on this: one needs to look at a hard drive as ultimately being a fungible commodity, like a inkjet or a toner cartridge or something like that. They have finite lifespans. 3-5 years is pretty good for a hard drive. It's depressing, but a fact of life in regards to hard drives. -- Michelle Klein-Hass Box 2273, Van Nuys, CA 91404-2273 Brought to you by Linux, KDE and KMail...try it, you'll like it! -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
