Is there no way to get SMART messages or logs on a Mac? It's 2004, way
beyond wondering what a noise from a hard drive is. Every drive is smart
enabled, scsi, ide etc. as long as it is enabled in the bios. Perhaps there
is a terminal query which would give one an idea of what smart thinks about
the drive.
Each manufacturer also has a diagnostic program. Usually they are DOS based
but they're only reading the drive, not the files so they may not be
os-specific. I assume there are Linux/Unix based routines also.

For the price of another drive, I'd pick one up and use a drive image app
to create a new image and then figure out what's wrong with the old one. Get
the important stuff off of it first and then diagnose later.
