I am also interested in the best low cost solution for this - but I also
work with a profesional filmmaker who makes DVDs with a $250 standalone
DVD recorder. They look great, and don't tie up the computer for simple
transfers. If you don't need to edit them this might be a good idea. If
you want to edit and customize them then all that's needed is the input
device... which I'd like to know about too!

Lou

My VCR is connected to a Miglica Director's Cut 2 video converter box, which in turn is connected to my G4 Mac with a FireWire cable. The VCR sends movies or other video through the Miglia into iMovie or Final Cut Express, where I edit it, and then I can burn it onto a DVD or send it back out to videotape in the VCRs (the Miglia can connect to TWO VCRs at once, or one plus a TV monitor).

This converter box is stone-simple to use and produces video with great sharpness and color.

You can check the Miglia DC-2 video converter out here: http://www.miglia.com/products/video/director2/

Price is under $300.

Also get some big, fast hard drives (external firewire drives work fine) to capture and store video.
