Hi there EC

I'm have a B/W G4 500 for my main machine, they are fantastic..Slap a Mac Edition Radeon PCI card in it and they really like it too!

As for your problem, i had this happen to me the first time i started upgrading my memory. I was trying a 256mb, and it just would not install OSX. But OS 9 would work ok for me.

Well needless to say, it all began working when i took out the 256mb. What your discribing sounds like the same thing. Do you have the means to try another type of 512mb?

I found all my problems went away after i removed the troublesome ram. Some chips don't like our macs.

Best of luck!

I'm so happy that I can post again.....Thanks to Dan et. al.
Here's the deal, I LOVE playing around with older Macs, I've been doing it for years. I recently bought a Revision 1 Blue & White G3 from PowerMax. It came with 8.6 installed on it on a 6 gig drive and 'definitely' not the original video card...it was some 8 gig no name card POS. It also had 2 RAM sticks (total of 256 mb) both different sizes--physically....to me the whole thing looked 'thrown together'. It did and does boot but I was less than pleased. I put in a 120 gig drive and bought the Sonata video card from Sonnettech. I also bought the 500 mhz G4 upgrade ZIF and their Aria wireless card. Also bought 512 of cheap RAM. I put all of this in and have been trying to get some version of OS X running on it, practically everything fails. The failure occurs when the installation finishes and it reboots....then it just hangs. I've had a few successful installs but then if I go on to install any of the updates files get corrupted and the OS becomes unstable and crashes and burns. Also, I've tried installing OS 9.1 on it.....it runs with much greater stability but on restart, I get random 'bombs' and notices that I must restart with extensions off. Thankfully, this is not my primary Mac....but it sure is fun to play around! Anyway, a lot of what I describe above is really frustrating too. I'd like to have 10.4 on it with 9.1 as the classic part.....but that seems to be elusive. Oh, with the Sonnet ZIF upgrade, I've taken it out and remove the ROM patch. Any suggestions on possible fixes would be greatly appreciated. Do any of you think this could be a RAM issue?
