Look at the Dell you're comparing them to. Betcha it's a Celeron,
with integrated video, a CD rom drive and a 15" CRT monitor. Does it
have Firewire? CDRW? iLife?
Does it come with OS X? No, then there's no comparison, is there?
And I expect Apples high end computers to be
comparable to high end PCs. In other words, I consider Apples
computers to be
server quality so I expect the price to be comparable to a PC
server. Right
now, you can get a 64 bit Athlon system (3000, so I guess like
2.4GHz?), in a
fancy case, with 1GB RAM, 128MB VRAM, not sure about the rest of
the specs but im
sure its at least a DVD/CDRW, and a large SATA HD, for $1000.
That isn't a *server* by any <bleeping> stretch of the imagination.
It's just a desktop with a fast CPU.
Servers are another whole class of critters; in fact Apple's
*servers* compete VERY well on price with Dell's, HP's or IBM's servers.
Finally compare Apple to other manufacturers on it's tier. Sure you
can get a cheapo garage box from the Lucky Dragon Fortune Cookie and
Motherboard Factory, but do you WANT one?
If Apple sold
a tower computer for $1000 Id be happy.
No, you would probably whine that it wasn't $750. <sigh>
