I may be confused:
What is Classic?
We have OS 8.x and 9.x is this classic?
We have OS 10.0,2,3,4 is this classic?
Classic is OS 9.2 running WITHIN X.
IS IT JUST 9.2 OR WILL X CALL ANY OS IN THE 8 TO 9 SERIES?
OS X requires OS 9.1 or better for use in the 'Classic' environment.
Your computer may also start up in OS 8.x or 9.x, but that is a
different issue.
IN other words, you start up the computer in X, then
DO I START CLASSIC OR JUST BECAUSE I CLICKED ON AN OLDER
APPLICATION THAT WE KNOW AS BEING FROM OS 8.6, THAT X
STARTS THE OLDER OS FOR ME.
Double clicking on an older Mac os program will start the Classic
environment if you have a OS 9.1 or better System Folder on one of
your mounted volumes.
start Classic.
CAN I START CLASSIC OR IS IT AUTOMATIC?
You can start it manually in system Prefs, it will start
automatically if you run an older program, or you can set it to start
at startup.
ALL of the above information, btw, is contained in the Mac Help that
cames with OS X...
