Hello everyone. Recently bought an old beige PowerMac G3/300 desktop. According to the system profiler, the ROM revision is $77D.45F2 (which corresponds to Rev. 3 according to the LEM page on this model), it is equipped with 192MB of RAM, and is currently running OS 9.2.2. I am attempting to install OS X 10.2, but whenever I click the Restart button shown in the splash screen, I get the following error: "Startup Disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk. (-2)". LEM's page on this model series states that the beige G3/300 cannot boot from the CD-ROM drive unless the jumper is set to master; I checked the jumpers, and it was already set as such. Any ideas as to why I would still be getting this sort of error, even if all the proper criteria seemed to have been met? Thanks in advance.

Hello, & welcome to the wonderful world of trying to get X on a beige...been there, done that just the previous week. (Now successfully, but it was balky at times, too.)

A few thoughts: Are you using the retail (all models) installer, or a model-specific disk? (I used an iMac installer set, successfully, in the end.)

Is your *hard drive* set as master as well, on the other bus? Maybe it's saying that because now, after you've installed, the installer is looking for a bootable drive somewhere, but is only seeing a CD-ROM drive as master -- which, of course, won't do for the next session.

Keep trying, X can be difficult at times, & about the most amazingly petty things. Fortunately for me, it liked all my installed RAM, & hardware, & the CD wasn't too scratched for it's taste -- all problems I've heard about with others...
