A beige will boot from a X.1 or a X.2 disk. You can directly install X.2 without having X.1 installed first. You do not even need 9.x installed first, but you will need to install 9.x if you want to run any classic applications.
A beige will not directly boot off of X.3 or X.4 CDs without the help of xpostfacto and various hoop jumping.
Note that you can not go directly from 10.2.0 to 10.2.8 on a beige, there is a TIL note on Apples site that says to go from 10.2.0 to 10.2.6 to 10.2.8
