I listened, and there was no activity whatsoever. The Caps Lock key

pretty good sign that the system is truly hung, from my past

and am currently running Disk First Aid from the OS X install CD.
Might turning off the "Turn off HD whenever possible" item in the
Energy Saver section possibly have any effect on the whole blanking
problem?

Well if you do and it makes an improvement let me know.
My theory is that between the OS and the disk controller there isn't
very much checking being done. One of the things that the OSX system
(and Unix) does is swapping. Meaning that what is in memory is
temporarily swap out to the disk to make room for another application
or when the kernel thinks that it needs more RAM space. I think that
the disk controller isn't doing any checking when it writes to the
disk. Some systems develop a check sum on the data that is being sent
to the disk and after the disk write it does a check sum test to make
sure that the correct data got there. Another implementation is to just
dump the data and keep going. That's fine if you are writing to a RAID
system because the RAID software makes sure what was written on one
drive is written on the other and if not then it request the the data
be sent again. Plus some RAID systems are always making sure that the
platers are Okay and if not the sectors that are in trouble are taken
out of the available sector table ( to make it simple)
So I think during a monitor screen layout swap to the disk it gets
lost, never to be found because there's isn't an Indiana Jones running
around in there looking for that missing data, or looking for the Holy
Grail.
Best Regards,
