And that would be better (faster, I suppose?) than if I put that same hard drive in an enclosure that has both FireWire and USB2 connections? Because I priced enclosures the other day, and they cost about the same as that card, and the external drive would also be useful with my iBook. Or am I missing
something?

Well, you could boot from it if it's internal, you can't boot a B&W from a FW drive, but having an external drive for use with multiple systems is an excellent idea for backup purposes.
