Okay, I ordered some new RAM from OWC--six 256M sticks, because I need three for my B&W G3 (for a total of four, including one 256M I already have) and my parents wanted three to max out the memory on their PC, which also uses
the same kind.

I prepared to test the memory using the sandwich method described on this list by Jeff Walther, using the 64M Samsung and 256M Kingston DIMMs that
were in the G3 when I bought it. ...snip...

Joy,

Not knowing what your original RAM is, compared to what you bought from OWC, it could be that they are not the same type/speed and don't play well together. Have you tried putting only the OWC RAM in for testing? If it were me, I would put four sticks of the OWC RAM in and run the test. As you said, it will not completely test all of the RAM. But it might give you entirely different results. And, if the test goes well you can swap them around.

Your mention of the Kingston DIMM reminded me of a painful experience. Back in January I fixed up a G3B&W for a friend. I got it back a few weeks ago because she was having regular Kernel Panics. I swapped drives, reseated cards and replaced cables, but could not find the problem. Your original post and Jeff's answers made me realize I should probably recheck the RAM. When I pulled the RAM, to put in my G3 for testing, I noticed this Kingston chip in there. I had originally installed two 256 chips from OWC. Apparently some other well meaning friend had given her the 256MB Kingston chip. Although it was a 168 pin PC 100 DIMM, it was one that belonged in an early G4. Once I removed that chip the G3 was stable again.

I don't know if I should yell at the other friend or thank them. I put the Kingston in my husband's G4 where it was a welcome addition.
