Yes, this occurred to me but there are so many different variables to memory that I can't figure it all out. > Have you tried putting only the OWC RAM in for testing? Yes, I tried this and the machine wouldn't start up at all. All of the memory I just bought from OWC has now failed Gauge Pro's memory test (4 of them on the first pass, none made it past pass 15). I have a hard time believing all six DIMMs are bad. So I'm wondering, if I had good memory that was just the wrong kind for my machine, would the memory testing software fail? If that's a possibility, I'll take these modules out to my parents' house and use the memory tester recommended a few days ago by Piers Kittel, memtest86, which can be used on a floppy, though only on a PC. (I do have a PC here, and had thought it would take these same modules, but it won't take over 128 per DIMM.) If the memory isn't bad, according to the test on my folks' PC, I obviously have the wrong kind of memory. But what kind of "wrong"? ... > Apparently some other > well meaning friend had given her the 256MB Kingston chip. Although it > was a 168 pin PC 100 DIMM, it was one that belonged in an early G4. How do you know this? What factors are you looking at to determine that? CAS or CL rating? Speed (3-2-2, 2-2-2, etc. or PC66 vs 100 vs 133)? Density? (what is a low density DIMM anyway?) I've found a few resources online that explain more than just the basic variables of memory, but none are really very layman-friendly. > Once I removed that chip the G3 was stable again. > > I don't know if I should yell at the other friend or thank them.
