Hi Listers,

I might be able to get some free upgrades for my G3, but need some
questions answered. TIA for your help.

Memory refresher on current setup (Mac to possibly be upgraded): G3 Beige
DT, Rev 3, 266 MHz, 256 megs RAM, OS 9.2.2

Questions:

1. How fast is the fastest processor we can put in this Mac? Can anyone
suggest specific chips?

Sonnet has CPU upgrades up to 800-1000 Mhz for these systems I think. Waste of money, IMO, but they have them.

2. Can a processor pulled from a B&W work in my Beige?

absolutely. Because of differences in the bus speed and CPU multiplier, it will run at a different speed than in the B&W, but that's it. You'll need to set the jumpers appropriately (see the OWC link below) and press the cuda switch before starting back up.

4. At what processor speed do you need a bigger fan and/or heat sink than
the one already in my G3 to keep from frying the works?

I ran a 450 MHz G4 in mine for a couple of years with no problems.

5. When upgrading to a faster processor, after installation, will the G3 "tell me" (in the Apple System Profiler, for instance) that my "machine speed" is now, say, 300 MHz (or whatever it turns out to be), or would I have to do something to tell the G3 that I have a faster processor? If I
have to tell it, how?

Yes it will post a speed in system profiler.

The way the CPU speed is set is dependent on some jumpers on your motherboard. OWC has a guide to setting these here <http:// eshop.macsales.com/Tech/FTP/Zif/owcmerczifset.pdf>

6. Would a USB card pulled from a Beige Tower work in a Beige Desktop? If
so, does it need any kind of drivers or other software?

Yes. You may have to do a custom install from your 9.2.2 disk to get the USB drivers, or just re-apply the 9.2.2 combo updater. (USB and Firewire drivers are present in OS 9, but they're not installed if no USB or Firewire hardware is detected at system installation time.)
