Ok, here we go.... > 1. How fast is the fastest processor we can put in this Mac? Can anyone > suggest specific chips?
Well, I have used a sonnet G4 500 in one of these machines, it worked wounderfully. I've seen sonnets that go up to as much as 1Ghz, but I've never used one that fast. > 2. Can a processor pulled from a B&W work in my Beige? Possibly, but it's hit or miss. I'd advise against it because you could do damage to the beige or the cpu or both. > 3. If the only way to "test" a processor is by visual inspection, is it > printed anywhere how fast it is? If so, what do you look for? I've never seen markings on OEM apple CPUs that told me anything, but I may not be reading it right. Anyone know defenitavely? > 4. At what processor speed do you need a bigger fan and/or heat sink than > the one already in my G3 to keep from frying the works? I've never had a heat problem with my upgrades. If you overclocked you might have to go with a fan, but the stock parts don't need it and the upgrades will come with it if they do. > 5. When upgrading to a faster processor, after installation, will the G3 > "tell me" (in the Apple System Profiler, for instance) that my "machine > speed" is now, say, 300 MHz (or whatever it turns out to be), or would I > have to do something to tell the G3 that I have a faster processor? If I > have to tell it, how? Nope, all done by the firmware. It's plug and play. > 6. Would a USB card pulled from a Beige Tower work in a Beige Desktop? If > so, does it need any kind of drivers or other software? Yes, drivers are already in the OS. > Thanks for your help, everybody! > > ~Yersinia. > > ________ > > "Organic chemistry is the chemistry of carbon compounds.
