Bruce -- Thanks for the reference to NIST--the report responds to virtually every question that has been debated on this and other lists on CD/DVD longevity. I was interested in comments that storage life is based on 77 F and 50 % humidity. In most cases the temperature standard is met in our home environment. I wonder about the humidity--as you know in Tucson--we virtually never see 50% --is it the more critical factor?

The report brought back memories for me-- I worked there in the mid 70s--then known as NBS or National Bureau of Standards. Amazing place they had experts on almost everything. I remember talking to one of the computer experts and he showed me this amazing piece of plastic which could be used to store data on. It was one of the early floppies--7-8" type. He worked in the organization that has now published this report.

Anyway thanks for the info and the memories.

I suppose it's a possibility, but how would I be able to tell, and
if it
IS dirty, how would I clean it?

This is probably not related but I read an article a couple of years ago that said the glue used in CD labels spawns a fungus that will actually eat through the data layer of the CD. Turns out CD's aren't forever. The article
suggested using magic markers or something else besides labels.

The National Institutes of Standards and Technology has a guide to archiving electronic data:

<http://www.itl.nist.gov/div895/carefordisc/ CDandDVDCareandHandlingGuide.pdf> and has done considrable research on the subject.
