Is this about what I've said? Yes I want Apple to adhere to
common specifications so I can put an Apple legal motherboard in an ATX
case of my choosing. But I already said, cost is not a main factor,
since building a computer rarely results in a huge cost savings if any.
Lets see, here are some examples of things in the computer world I
disagree with:
Gateway putting metal tabs in their CD bay and slots on their CD drives
so only Gateway CD drives work (unless you just remove those tabs)
Gateway using what is in every respect an ATX power supply except the
locations of the mounting screw holes
Apple making what is in every regard a USB 1 cable except for some tabs
so that only their keyboard would fit it
Compaq requiring Compaq memory, which costs at least twice as much
These are all just dirty tactics at making money (OK money isnt the
ONLY reason for using these tactics). If Apple uses Intel built
motherboards, or motherboards based on an Intel motherboard, they would
actually have to do extra work and go out of their way to make it NON
ATX compliant. And yes, Apple asked Intel to help design their
motherboards.
People who have a problem with Apple switching to ATX standards may
also have had the following disagreements with Apples decisions:
Apple switching to PCI
Apple using USB
Apple using ATA
Apple using Unix
Apple using Intel processors
Apples running Windows
I think it is a good thing to make their products more, how about
compatible? Or, how about versatile? And to everyone saying Apple is
a hardware company, is that just another way of saying Apple makes more
money off hardware than software?

They are just wishing for a do-it-yourself Intel Mac so they won't have
to
pay the premium price Apple gets for their hardware.

Mike, I think you summed up what I've been thinking pretty well. I
totally agree. When I read the opinions of some of these posters who
*think* they know better than the Board of Directors at Apple, I just
have to smile and shake my head. I mean what inside information do
they have that Apple and Steve Jobs doesn't? Sure, Apple Computer
has just decided to commit corporate suicide, yeah, that's it......
