(BTW, I offer a really terrific prize to anyone who can tell me how to file share a 7300 on 9 with a G4 QS on Tiger using a cross over cable. Just tell me the first few steps and I will tell you if I can get that far and am ready to go on...)

Turn the G4 on first.

The 7300's ethernet doesn't 'see' a network unless the other end is live (which is why a hub or switch makes this a better proposition than a crossover cable. Also, the G4 has an autosensing ethernet port, you don't need a crossover cable to cross over.) This is the usual thing. You may be able to just reset the Appletalk to look at the Ethernet port, it'll revert to printer port otherwise.

Enable File sharing over IP on the 7300.

Now they should see each other.

If they don't, look in one or the other's Networking prefs or System Profiler, and make sure they have IP addresses (they'll be 192.168.something, I think) If one or the other has a different range (I forget what range the machines will self-assign in) reset that one to be in the others range, but not the same.
