This one's weird and got me stumped. I'm trying to install Panther 10.3 to an
empty IDE drive on ATA bus 1 on this B & W (see spec's below). The OS X
install disk installs the core system but fails to ask for the second disk needed to complete the installation. It only says finished without asking for the
second disk and then restarts to a kernel panic.

Then if I reboot in single user mode it boots to a text screen that ends with:

"Kernel Version:
Darwin Kernel Version 7.0.8
Wed Sept 24 15:48:39 PDT 2003: root:xnu/xnys-517.obj~1/RELEASE_PPC
panic: we are hanging here"

These are the gray OS X install disks purchased from OWC. I know the set works on other B & W's. But disk 1 needs to ask for disk 2 to install all the Panther apps like Safari, iPhoto, etc, a bunch of other stuff and then optimize
and complete the installation.

I have hit the cuda button, and confirmed the firmware update 1.1 has been
installed. I'm out ideas. Help!! What am I missing?

The fresh install of OS 9.2.2 on the SCSI drive seems to work OK so I believe the basic hardware of the B & W is sound -- well it is a rev 1 but only has
one IDE attached to ATA bus 1.

System Configuration:
350 MHz G3 Blue & White, rev 1
544 MB RAM
ATA bus 0 - DVD-ROM pulled from a G4 Sawtooth and a Zip 100
ATA bus 1 - Seagate ST340810A (40 gig HD - empty, erased with disk utility)
Video - stock ATA Rage 128 (16 MB)
PCI slot: Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card
SCSI bus 1 - Seagate ST39140N (9 GB HD) with OS 9.2.2 installed

Take your time I'm digest mode and not in a rush. --glen

My installer also failed to ask for the second disk once. I checked in System Prefs > Startup Disk and found that the drive that I was installing on was not set as the startup disk. After I reset the startup disk to be the one I was installing on, and restarted, the Mac then asked for the second disk and installed the OS fine.

BTW my installers are also the gray eMac disks from OWC, and they work fine. About the third screen into the installation you'll see that it says something like "This System can be installed on the following computers" and under that is "Powermac G4." On mine, anyway.
