Check the Master/Slave setting of the drive. If it's set to Master, try
unsetting it
entirely.

The jumpers are set to Master. If I remove all jumpers the drive will be set
to Slave. Is this what you mean by unsetting? I'm still have a lot to learn
regarding ATA/IDE drives. Will the target drive be recognized if set to Slave
when no Master is present? The only other jumper setting that seems relevant is
Cable Select which I recall is not correct for the B & W.

Hope there is another solution to your problem, but the Rev. 1 does have
issues with different drives!

--------------
Me too. I remember reading on another list that anything larger than the 6 GB
drives that shipped with the B & W rev 1 can be problematic. I was just
hoping I could use this 40 MB in this one.

Anyone using a drive 40 MB or larger in a B & W rev 1 without problems?

My installer also failed to ask for the second disk once. I checked in System
Prefs > Startup Disk and found that the drive that I was installing on was
not set as the startup disk. After I reset the startup disk to be the one I was
installing on, and restarted, the Mac then asked for the second disk and
installed the OS fine.

I don't understand, how can I choose an empty hard drive with no system
installed as the startup disk? The OS X install disk does not see it, nor does
OS
9.2.2 the Startup control panel in the SCSI hard drive.

You can install the second disk manually. I believe it is a mpkg, just double
click on
it.

Or is it not booting (in normal mode). If so I'd suggest running the install
again
>>

---------------
Yeah, it is not booting the normal mode. I thought I'd try Single User mode
just see if it would provide any insights to the problem. And yes, I tried
running the installer again and again and . . .

Thanks Bruce, Amanda, Tom and Clark you have provided valuable information.
Unfortunately I've had very little time today to try anything.

Perhaps the best thing to do is just move the drive to my rev 2 B & W, set
the jumpers to slave and install OS 10.3 there. Then reset to Master and
transplant into the rev 1.

Does anyone think removing the Adaptec 2930CU would help? I know on some
unsupported Mac's removing certain PCI cards is necessary to install OS X. But
then the B & W (rev 1) is supported. And according to the Adaptec site so is
the
2930CU.
