Does anyone think removing the Adaptec 2930CU would help? I know on
some
unsupported Mac's removing certain PCI cards is necessary to install
OS X. But
then the B & W (rev 1) is supported. And according to the Adaptec site
so is the
2930CU.

Removing that card is one of the things I would try first. Second I would make sure that only one memory module is installed, preferably the one which came with the Mac, because sometimes out of spec memory can cause strange things. You can put 'em back when you're done installing the OS, nine out of ten times
they will still work fine.

This is sound advice. I found that X would not install on my G4 if a certain one of the three memory chips was installed. Then I discovered that it would not install if a certain PCI video card was installed. Removing these two things allowed X to install easily (from those gray eMac disks sold by OWC). With either item in place, the installer only brought up the green "kernel panic" screen. It is impossible to predict what will choke X, it is so fussy. Trial and error (stripping the Mac down to the bare bones, trying to install X, and putting it back together item by item) is the only way to find out what's causing the trouble.
