Three response already -
All agree that is probably a dead or dying PRAM.

So off to OWC or some other source and get a G3 PRAM battery actually two.
I will go ahead and replace the one in my other G3 too while I am at it.

Anyone know of a good source.

Subject: [G] Beige G3 boot problem- SCSI HDD or SCSI Controller?? Or Other??

OK..this is the second time my Beige G3 has “went out” on me - looks like
the drive goes bad (to me). But two in a row??

Ok…the second one was a used drive – I got it from the [swap] list. But I
don’t believe the drive is bad.

Must be the controller, right??

Here are the symptoms – on boot get the disk symbol with the flashing
question mark.

When I boot to a cd to try to reload – I get a message that tells me the
system time is wrong.

CD symbols as the wallpaper - and all I hear is the same two toned song.
Baaaaaah-Deep! Baaaaaah-Deep!
Low pitch tone followed by a shorter High pitched tone. Repeated over and
over with no message on the screen.
It is like the system is looking for something.
I have a menu at the top with only Help highlighted - but when I click
nothing happens.
I can bet the system to reboot by hitting ctrl + option + command + power.
I reset the PRAM command + option + P + R did that 4X - no change in
symptom.

Anyone have the info on what I need to do to correct this problem??
I have another PCI scsi controller I can pop in – and see if that will
bypass the problem.
I have not done it yet – because the controller was for a WINDOWS PC.

But I had a windows PCI USB Card – and I put it in another G3 and it worked
fine.
OK so all you MAC experts help me out!! If there is a good FAQ or other
troubleshooting resource for Beige G3 systems,
Please point me to it. I’d appreciate any help and advice I could get. I
am an expert PC tech – but a novice MAC tech.

One piece of advice I am already looking into is GET a blue and white or a
G4 or better. I know (but finances don’t allow that att).

Thanks in Advance

Leroy
