The last thing I am stumped by is: Since I went to Panther Classic will not
launch, even though I have rebuilt the desktop and repaired permissions. Sad to
say I still need it at least once more. Do I have to re-install 9 (I hope
not) or what?

In my experience OS X seems picky about what extensions are installed in the
OS 9 when you use classic. I'm not using OS X as I write this so what follows
is from my memory.

Going to the Classic Control pane and use Extensions Manager to reset OS 9
extensions to "Mac OS 9 Basic" and try to restart Classic. And if you have more
than one OS 9 installed on various volumes be sure the one you want to use for
Classic is selected.

If Classic starts then use Extensions Manager add only the 3rd party
extensions you actually need. for the applications you need to run. --glen
