I think I have it fixed!  I've been listening to uninterrupted music
for about 30 minutes now, playing on my P4.  For anyone else
experiencing this particular problem, the solution is quite simple.
Simply edit the /etc/smb.conf file using Terminal and a suitable text
editor.  I used vi as it was the only thing available on my 10.2.6
machine...

I tried that first, but could not locate the file. I believe it resides in the private folder under OSX, but could not get it to come up. I had never used vi before, but a quick google search gave me the info I needed to edit the file.
