for future reference you can get to these files by using the Go To Folder command in the Finder.

Go to the folder /private to get to /etc where smb.conf resides.

I know this works in 10.3 and 10.4 reasonably certain about 10.2.

Wanted to tweak the settings a bit more and I tried this hint. I can open the smb.conf file in TextEdit, but it won't allow me to save it once I changed it. Tried resetting the preferences to allow writing of read-only files, but that didn't work either. Guess you can't edit files in this folder with TextEdit after all.

Get Pseudo, drop TextEdit onto it, then open the file.
