for future reference you can get to these files by using the Go To Folder command in the Finder.

Go to the folder /private to get to /etc where smb.conf resides.

I know this works in 10.3 and 10.4 reasonably certain about 10.2.

Thanks for the tip Bruce, I figured there was a way to do it, but rather waste time searching for the answer, I just used the way I was most familiar with. I'm just mainly glad that fixed the problem. The beige G3 DT makes the perfect file server for my network now. Plus I have the APC/UPS setup, complete with shutdown software and so I should be good to go for a long time to come.
