Note: For the cable select setting to work properly, the cables you
use must work with the cable select feature. For this reason, the
original Apple cables that came with the computer should be used
when installing additional drives. Some cables made by other
manufacturers may not correctly work with the cable select mode.
Those Apple cables are very special.
Apple's ROM uses Cable Select during initial power-on, only.
Thereafter, the Mac uses Master and Slave, in the conventional way.
Essentially, Apple has implemented only one-half of the jointly-
developed HP-Compaq IDE device initialization and reset mechanism.
The implementation uses three quite different cable connectors with
the host one having all connections, but the individual drive
connectors having one or more connections missing and/or tied to ground.
There is also an intentional cut in the cable.
All of this points to why special cables are required, and generic
cables won't work in Cable Select mode.
