Sure they did, and still do. Then again we are talking about games far more advanced and complicated than the most state-of-the-art accessible game. For example, allot of the new Star Wars games have layers and layers of areas to explore and many different cause and effects. Like in Knights of the Old Republic I recall there is two or three ways to get parts for your light saber.
