Multiple sets are necessary weather you group or not, especially for casters. In fact it's more of a necessity for a caster to have multiple sets to solo. You need to switch between your cast level set and your mana regen set. And you need to disregard armor class completely. Full cast sets are not built with armor in mind, especially not if you're playing anything necro. A lot of people go in thinking that armor class is necessary no amtter what class you are, and it really isn't. Sure a stray hit can kill you, but only if you go into the wrong area, and you'll only make that mistake once, and then go back when you're stronger. But the fact of the matter is, weather or not you solo on alter, which by the way as I've said is extremely hard no matter what class you're playing, especially if you want to solo some of the bigger stuff like high-level deeds, you need multiple sets.

Thanks John.

I don't group, so multiple sets isn't that necessary, but I could do with some better gear balancing armor vs cast level, I haven't really investigated player shops thus far, but I probably should.

With alter in particular, you probably want to have a few sets. As a cleric warrior (presuming your 25 cleric 20 warrior) you'll want to have a partial cleric clev (cast level) set, a warrior hit set and a tank set. I don't know a lot about clerics and what clev affects for them, so you may just want to build a set with lots of int, wis and mana regen. For warrior you want a hit set and a tank set. The former for dealing damage, and the latter for taking it. Of course, if you don't group, you'll want to try to build a hit set that has some decent armor in it as well. For me, that constitutes hit eq with a decent ac apply. As far as finding eq in shops goes, the only shops your going to find anything of real value in are player shops (I recommend the shop three east of the dragontooth waypoint). If you base all of your eq off of shops you'll also have a hard time at high levels (and even mid levels) because a lot of the better stuff is binding. I can tell you now that you'll need a group to get some of it. This doesn't, however, mean that you have to socialize; just gr sum your helper(s) into the room near the mob and then go in. They'll help you kill it and all's well.

It's not that I don't really do mechanics, I'll quite happily sit around and
check through a shop for best gear or buy better gear, it's more that I
don't spend hours of time on it looking for that one specific item to raise
some all important stats, I'll go with the best available option at the
time, be that in a shop, a donation room or whatever, then hit it with
enchants etc.

Alter isn't that bad, accept that I seem to have at the moment got a little
stuck as a clerric warrior trying to balance good casting gear vs good
armor, which isn't generally fun.

Really though, while I don't mind equip mechanics, it's reactive fights and
exploring that I find much more interesting than sitting and trying to
balance a lot of numbers out. I'll do it if it is likely to get me some
good, but not really go out of my way on it.

Unfortunately you need said builds to be able to explore, especially if
you're playing solo, and again this applies to pretty much all muds. You
might have some luck with Aardwolf, and of course Project Bob has randomly generated gear so even I don't max on there, but on most muds you have one
of two options. Group and play that way, or make your character awesome
and explore solo. There really isn't anything in between, unless you like
dying a lot. Even I can't solo very well on alter and I've got 12 years of
mudding experience, so I usually either lead a group or hit/tank in a
group. And Project Bob I haven't had the opportunity to play around with
the grouping system much, but I do know I like it, since there isn't
really a level range limit and the experience isn't messed up when you
group like it is on most muds. If mechanics aren't your thing, then muds
aren't for you, because in all my experience with muds I haven't yet found
one that will allow you to just go trundling along picking up whatever
looks cool and slapping it on and expect to get anywhere, even if your
objective is just exploration. Maybe give aardwolf a try, it has a lot of
navigational commands to get you places, and an eqsearch command to tell
you most of the best items for your level and where to get them. That's
probably your best option for easy exploration.

I'm personally usually a paladin or clerric player, because I like
utility magic such as heal, but I like fighting as well.

Generally though I don't really care enough about the game to do
mechanics to ridiculous levels, sinse I'd rather explore around and find
stuff than follow rigid guides or attempt to minimax, sinse to me it's
the atmosphere, exploring quests, and reactive elements of the game that
are more interesting than minimax builds.

I suppose the fact that I'm using sapi for mud output to read incoming
text might have an affect, sinse the voice is possibly reacting slower,
but I'm not sure, and there's no alternative to this really.
