Yes the MMODULE_MAGIC numbers will need to be realigned for the branch vs trunk.

Absolutely.  As soon as the branch is created, the purpose is then to stabilize 
the branch and move it towards release.  Hopefully that won't take too much 
time.  If major problems are found in testing, then those problems must be 
fixed before an official release.  But by creating the branch, trunk can 
continue with other innovative features which may not be appropriate for 3.1.x
