I do not know who is the conda "maintainer" but it would be nice to give more descriptive summary for gdal, libgdal and libgdal-core packages, because now they are the same: GDAL is a translator library for raster and vector geospatial data formats that is released under an X/MIT style Open Source license by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation. They are tens of packaging solutions, which are all independent from the source delivery, and happen after the source release.
