Speaking of VoIP, I just ordered service from Vonage
http://www.vonage.com. For $30/mo, I get unlimited long distance and
local calls. The only drawback is that I always have to dial 1 + area
code, even for local calls. This is for a phone line with *EVERY*
feature. For $5/mo, I have the ability to add a line to ring in from
any area code that Vonage services. I've been living in Jackson, MS for
a while, but I may add a Baton Rouge line so my mother can call her
grandkids for free.

I'll let you guys know how it works out.

Jim

Has anyone setup or used Asterisk (http://www.asterisk.org/) before?
It's a full-fledged open source PBX and runs on linux. I don't have a
landline at home, so was thinking about getting an FXO PCI card for the
pc at work, and a cheapo VoIP phone for home. Setup asterisk and a VPN
to
the house, and i'll have a landline at home. I think it'd be a neat
project and wondered if anyone else has done anything similar.

There are a couple of guys (file & facelessnumbers) that hang out on the
Xandros IRC channel (irc.freenode, net - #xandros) that talk about
Asterisk all the time. Facelessnumbers lives in Jackson, Ms, is
apparently an IT support guy, and is using/supportng it in a business
environment. File (EOF, BOF, who knows) is a 17 year old high school
student in Canada that also does consulting work around Asterisk as well
as a lot of other stuff. I am sure that either or both would be glad to
share their knowledge with you, but be warned that many in the channel
are often not at their computer, heck, I am at work and also in the
channel right now but not from work, or something like that.

I hope this helps,
