I have used Gentoo on an IBM TP600 PII 300 for some time.Works well,even KDE etc... Definatly usable, but no demon. The gs sources kernel,with the lowlatency and preemption reallyhelps.
I just got an IBM TP 21. PIII850, 32gigHD, 512mgmemory. And is is really fast with gentoo.
