I doubt it!! My custom ebuild was provided to me by an Alsa developer since they wanted me to test a sound card that at the time didn't work and I was probably the only person around who had one. (RME HDSP 9652) This ebuild patches the alsa-driver files in 0.9.6, so it's beyond what you get with ~x86. My question is really a bit larger though. Just because a set of drivers is supplied with the kernel doesn't mean they don't get updated. On 2.6 do I have to just run patches against the kernel source tree by hand, or with the alsa ebuild for 2.6 do that for me? And I understand if you don't know the answer.
