Building OOo from source takes about 2.5-3G, depending on version. I use a 3G logical volume mounted on /gentootmp. You have to set PORTAGE_TMP_DIR in /etc/make.conf accordingly. This way, you can live with a relatively small /var (a few hundred megs).
