Have you considered MATE? It's a pretty darn good replacement for XFCE; very 'minimal' -- though not quite as minimal as what you suggest -- and GTK+ based. I'm not extremely familiar with all of its features or lack thereof, but I was pleasantly surprised by it. -- Alecks Gates
