Let me start by informing you that the userreps project has been terminated.
However, the Gentoo userrel team, the team behind the userreps project, is
still alive and the gentoo-userrel ml is a very good place to discuss such
issues.

Although you don't strictly need to use a gentoo live-cd to install gentoo,
we try to provide a kernel that's compatible with most hardware. The kernel
isn't *too* old, but when the 2007.1 live-cds are finally released, we'll
have a more up-to-date kernel that should continue to improve our support
for most common hardware.
Are you sure the problems you're having are really caused by the live-cd
kernel? Can you provide a description of the hardware that's causing you the
problems? If you can boot with any Linux live-cd, look at the relevant
output of "lspci". Please try also to describe your problems with the cd.
Since you talk about the forums, if you made a post about your problem,
please give us a link to it. If not, you might want to consider creating a
post in the forums as that's generally a good way to get support.

The kernel in the live-cd should support most of the SATA/PATA devices,
although there are a few exceptions.

Thank you for your input.
