Hum... another good observation in the end.
I was about to say "because they get turned into XML element names" in
WFS... but then again,
maybe not everybody is using GML and maybe somebody does not even have WFS
active.

Maybe we need some sort of compromise, let me try a starting point: feature
types are validated
with the XML pattern, everything else with a much more lax one (e.g,
anything that does not
contain spaces and it's a valid file system name... FileNameUtils.normalize
seems usable
for the purpose), and the error message will say something like:

"Invalid name xyz, if you want to allow its usage add
-DGS_VALIDATE_CATALOG_NAMES=false
to the startup line of your web container"

and the variable would control if the validation is applied at all, or not
