Certain Australian state government departments, including the one
that pays me, move with glacial majesty when it comes to internal IT
standards.

Also (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) but all but the most
recent macs only have support for 1.5 from Apple.  There is the Soy
Latte port of Java 6 for OSX but (once again, CMIIW) it hitches you to
X11.
