I'm not sure, if I got your point here right. But you are talking about 
the technology or tools (e.g. PostGIS or Google Local Search) used and 
not the methods used. The method is described here: 
http://www.walkscore.com/how-it-works.shtml. And it is exactly that bit 
of brain investment to formulate this walk score, what makes the value 
of the information delivered by this mapping application.

This above mentioned example is to me a valuable GIS anlysis. Nobody 
says that only people with a university degree in geography or related 
sciences can do that. And the creator did in my eyes nothing else than 
just geography by putting this walk score algorithm together.
